The Legalities of Taking Photos For Your Website
I often get asked by clients whether they can post photos of work they’ve done on their website.
Beyond the common-sense advice of “it’s always better to ask permission,” it’s important to understand the legalities.
There’s a good article in USA Today that posts some guidelines:
- If you can see it from public property, you can shoot it
- Chances are pretty good that you can publish it
There are some important exceptions that these guidelines don’t apply to:
- Government buildings or military bases
- Taking a picture of a person who has a reasonable expectation of privacy
Obviously, this shoudn’t be construed as legal advice.
